An old friend took me to this Japanese steakhouse near her place last week. I had the best meal of my life when they served the fried rice with a unique mustard sauce. After that day, I was on a mission to find the recipe!
Soon enough, I learned that the sauce is known as Hibachi-style mustard sauce. It is a staple condiment in Japanese restaurants and is easy to make.
You need yellow mustard powder, toasted sesame seeds, soy sauce, and fresh cream to prepare the mustard sauce for fried rice. Just blend the mustard powder, sesame seeds, and soy sauce. Then, add the mixture to fresh cream and cook the sauce on low flame until it boils.
How to Make Hibachi-Style Mustard Sauce for Fried Rice?
Hibachi-style mustard sauce is truly a treat for the tastebuds with its umami, creamy, and toasted flavors.
Surprisingly, getting such a complex taste in one sauce is pretty straightforward. If you don’t believe me, try out the recipe mentioned below.

- 1/3rd cup of sesame seeds
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard powder
- 1½ tablespoons of water
- ½ cup of dark soy sauce
Steps to Follow
1. Add 1/3rd cup of sesame seeds to a nonstick pan.
2. Toast the sesame seeds until they turn slightly brown.
3. Then, dilute one tablespoon of yellow mustard powder with one and a half tablespoon of water.
4. Add the diluted ground yellow mustard, toasted sesame seeds, garlic powder, and soy sauce in a blender.
5. Blend the ingredients until they are combined well.
6. In a saucepan, pour one cup of heavy cream and let it simmer on low flame.
7. Add the blended soy sauce mix to the heavy cream.
8. Cook the sauce on low heat for five minutes and stir two to three times.
9. Once the sauce simmers, turn off the stove and transfer it to a bowl.
10. Serve it on the side with fried rice!
Quick Tip: If you don’t have mustard powder, grind a teaspoon of yellow mustard seeds in a blender. Avoid using black mustard, as it has a bitter aftertaste that can ruin your sauce.
How Can You Prepare Hot Mustard Sauce at Home?
Apart from the Hibachi-style mustard sauce, there is also hot mustard sauce. It is spicier, stronger (like wasabi), and less creamy than the Hibachi-style sauce.
If you love low-effort dishes, then this is one you will enjoy, as it takes just five minutes. Below are the instructions for this sauce.
- 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard powder
- 2 teaspoons of hot water
- Salt and white pepper (to taste)
- ½ teaspoon of vegetable or canola oil
1. Mix mustard powder, salt, and white pepper in a bowl.
2. Add the hot water and vegetable oil.
3. Stir all the ingredients until well combined.
4. Cover the sauce and let it rest for 10 minutes.
Once done, just stir the sauce before serving. You can also add any additional ingredients to customize its taste.
Tips for Storing Mustard Sauce for Fried Rice
It is easy to make mustard sauce in bulk. Thankfully, there are two easy ways to store it for another day.
Method 1: Refrigerating the Mustard Sauce
If you want to store the mustard sauce briefly, consider refrigerating it. It can stay fresh for up to seven days in the fridge. However, I suggest using it within three to four days to keep its flavors intact.
Here is how you can refrigerate mustard sauce:
- First, allow the mustard sauce to cool until it has reached room temperature.
- Pour the mustard sauce into a jar or bottle. Close the lid tightly to prevent contamination from nearby products.
- Store the mustard sauce bottle in the fridge. Ensure that the refrigerator’s temperature is below 40 Degrees Fahrenheit.
Tip: store any sauces in the back of the fridge. This arrangement keeps them away from any stinky foods!
Method 2: Freezing the Sauce
You may feel too lazy to prepare the mustard sauce repeatedly. Instead, make a huge batch and freeze it for at least a month or two.
Below are the steps to freeze mustard sauce:
- Let the hot mustard sauce cool to room temperature.
- Take an airtight container, pour the sauce into it, and tighten the lid.
- You can also use vacuum-sealed freezer bags, but don’t forget to remove the extra air.
- Next, freeze the mustard sauce for up to two months.
Keep the mustard sauce container or bag away from contaminating foods like meat and chicken.
How to Reheat Mustard Sauce After Freezing?
When I first stored my mustard sauce in the refrigerator, I felt confused about how to defrost it! What if just heating it in the microwave ruins its texture?
Well, there is one way to take care of your mustard sauce without affecting its original texture.
All you need to do is defrost the mustard sauce by storing it in the fridge overnight. This method takes some time but almost zero effort if you think of it beforehand.
Alternatively, you can fill your sink or a cooking pot with hot water. Then, place the mustard sauce jar or container in it and let it thaw. This method is faster than the refrigerator.
I love the microwave, but I don’t recommend using it for reheating mustard sauce. Trust me, the sauce will lose its moisture by releasing water while heating. As a result, it may also lose its flavor or go stale.
What Can You Serve With Mustard Sauce?
Mustard sauce pairs beautifully with Chinese fried rice. You can also use it with other foods due to its unique and toasty flavor.

Traditionally, mustard sauce is often served with egg rolls. It goes well with egg rolls as its intense flavor complements the roll’s more subtle flavors.
